We all make mistakes in our daily lives, whether it is related to delaying an important task or arriving late at work. But some mistakes can lead you even worsen problems and threaten the health of your career. Therefore, to ensure that we take the proper steps toward career development, it’s vital to identify the most common blunders and learn how to avoid them.

 

Here are some of the most common mistakes people make in their careers

1. Not following your Dream Job

Everyone has the dream of a perfect job. By keeping in view our future, we all have career goals, and to achieve those goals, we get the education and skills accordingly. But when we enter our professional lives after getting the degree, those career goals often seem out of reach because most employers hire people with two or more years of experience in the related field of interest. So, usually, we ended up doing any entry-level job that we never intended of pursuing.

So it is better to consider an internship that leads you towards your career goals rather than an entry-level useless job. Stick with your goals and find a job that you “really want”. 

 

2. Getting too comfortable

Nothing comes easily! We have to leave our comfort zones to achieve bigger goals. Sometimes, when we get our dream job, we make ourselves useful to it. We work only in the same position for many years and get comfortable with it, which causes limited exposure & growth. It is unethical to make ourselves habitual of the same environment and tasks. But this isn’t the right thing. It’s important to continue striving for more and working towards the next level.

 

3. Lack of Confidence

If you are well experienced and skilled, but you are unable to communicate it with others, then you are doing nothing but damaging your career. In other words, stop hiding under your pile of paperwork and start showing your boss why you deserve the promotion.

 

4. Becoming a jack of all trades

It’s essential to specialize in your particular field rather than being a generalist. You will have acquired a variety of talents from working in various positions across a variety of different industries. You most likely won’t have expertise on one particular skill or talent, but rather a general understanding of a lot of them.

 

5. Blurring the lines between personal and professional

Although you’ll inevitably become friendly with your coworkers over time, it’s crucial to maintain a professional demeanour at the office. It’s necessary to keep in mind that you shouldn’t break the law just because you get along well with a coworker.

 

6. Failing to network

Professionals may cease networking once they land the job they want because one advantage of having a network makes you able to get employment opportunities. Maintaining your network can help you grow your career and improve your professional life. Your network could be able to give you job prospects, skill-improvement advice, industry updates, or referrals.

Social media is the best tool to stay in contact with your network. You can create a group and share updates about your careers and new industry information.

 

7. Burning bridges

 

In the early stage of your career, you should not consider destroying your relationship with your seniors. Don’t let them know what you think about them. If you are leaving the job due to issues with your senior/boss, don’t mention this thing that you disliked them. It will badly impact you, and you will have to say goodbye to a good reference.

Never give anyone a reason to criticize you in any way. Always part ways on good terms and amicably.

 

8. Never giving yourself a break

Working hard is essential for building a career. But also need time for relaxation and catharsis. You’re going to reach a point where you will burn out if you continuously check up on your emails in your personal time. It’s necessary to choose the career path that allows you a healthy work-life balance.

 

9. Choosing money before anything else

Money plays a crucial role in choosing a career, so there is no getting around that. All of us need money to cover our expenses and purchase the items we desire in life. However, you have no doubt heard the saying that money cannot bring happiness. Therefore, the majority of your life will be spent at work, so you must enjoy it.

 

10. Taking a job with limit growth prospects

Do not consider a job that does not offer anything in terms of career prospects and growth. People get frustrated and exhausted if they do the same thing. Therefore, new learning and growth opportunities should be there. Organizations should introduce some training courses from time to time.

 

11.  Not dressing the part

Every place has some discipline and requires a specific dress code. If you’re not dressing the part, you’re likely to set yourself up to fail. It’s important to dress for the role you want to have and not for your current position.

 

12. Becoming Passive

It’s common to become passive in your profession after working in a company for a while. Focus on your job objectives and make an effort to improve yourself proactively to avoid making errors.
